CALCULATOR POLICY: A cheap scientific calculator is required for exams, but more
computing power than that is not needed. Exam problems are formulated so that they
can be solved by hand, with occasional help from a scientific calculator to
compute a square root or a logarithm. Often I ask for answers in exact form so
that no numerical calculations are needed. If special tables are needed, e.g. of
the Poisson or normal distributions, I will provide them. Any calculator is
permitted on an exam, but I draw the line at laptops---these are forbidden.
