1. Materials and Methods
Thirteen male Long Evans rats (400 - 470 g at implantation) were housed individually in
transparent Plexiglass cages (45 cm x 30 cm x 35 cm). Seven of these rats were taken from a
previous study with an identical behavioral procedure (S1); these animals were used only to
estimate the proportion of active cells in CA3 in the multiple room experiment. All animals were
