Summary: Title: A Sustainability-Themed Science and Technology Center at Cornell?
Abstract: NSF has announced a new competition for Science and
Technology Centers (STCs): Integrative Partnerships. This program
supports innovative, potentially transformative, complex research and
education projects that require large-scale, long-term awards. They
provide a means to undertake significant investigations at the
interfaces of disciplines and the Atkinson Center is interested in
stimulating one or more responses on sustainability topics. This
lunch will provide some basic information, including criteria and
timelines, about STCs and offer a platform for interested researchers
to discuss overlapping interests possibly leading to a proposal.
There have been no recent STC awards in New York State. In 1999,
Cornell was awarded an STC on Nanobiotechnology, which has since
"graduated." This informal lunch gathering is an ideal opportunity to
envision how a new sustainability-themed STC would conduct
world-class research through partnerships among academic
institutions, and other entities, to strengthen Cornell's impact in
this arena.
