At the heart of the mobile revolution
Dr Ian Wassell was at Southampton at the beginning of the mobile phone
revolution. As digital technology replaced analogue in the late 1980s,
bulky handsets were becoming more portable and batteries lasted more
than just a few minutes. His career to date has spanned research in both
the academic and industrial worlds, constantly seeking to improve mobile
communications.
Physics was a favourite subject for the young scientist, growing up near
Wolverhampton. "I remember making a crystal set when I was at school,
inspired by my father," he says. "It was a natural choice to study
engineering at university. While my degree at Loughborough was fairly
broad-based, I become more and more interested in electronic
engineering."
On graduation, Ian took a job at Marconi in Portsmouth and worked in
