1a. All leaves whip or decurrent (composed of a blade with free tip and a sheath that clasps the
stem), no scale-leaves; endemic to Cuba.........................................................................J. saxicola
1b. Plants with both scale-like and decurrent (at least on juvenile growth) leaves
2a. Ultimate leafy branchlets 1.3-1.6 mm. wide, and 2-4 cm. long, scale-leaves overlapping by
almost 1/2 their length; leaves opposite, branchlets square, persistent brown scale-leaves
on branches, decurrent leaves rarely present, endemic to Bermuda..............J. bermudiana
2b. Ultimate leafy branchlets 0.7-1.0 mm. wide and 0.5-2.0 cm. long, scale-leaves overlapping
by about 1/4 their length
3a. Scale-leaf tips acuminate to mucronate; 1-2 seeds per seed cone, single-seeded cones,
globose, but 2- seeded cones nearly reniform (bi-lobed)
4a. Branchlets pendulous, ultimate leafy branching angle 20-30 degrees; glands on old,
brown, persistent whip-leaves not conspicuous: endemic to Hispaniola........................
