Introduction to Frequency Domain Processing Pre-lab
1 Overview and Goals
This pre-lab consists of three different parts:
1. Dual Tone Multi Frequency Synthesis / Decoding
2. Introduction to the Fast Fourier Transform
3. Application of FFT in DTMF Decoding
In the first part, you will be required to solve, in MATLAB, a practical example from telephony:
Dual Tone Multi Frequency, where signals are thought of as composed of frequency domain
elements. You will first synthesize such signals then decode them using a simple filtering scheme.
Next, you will be introduced to a computational technique, called the Fast Fourier Transform that
allows us to efficiently determine the frequency content of signals, i.e. the DFT. Finally, you will
use the MATLAB FFT function to perform DTMF decoding, instead of the filtering approach
proposed in the first part.
2 Dual Tone Multi Frequency Synthesis / Decoding
a. Read the attached DSP First Lab 7 experiment [1].
b. Solve the "Warm-up" section, by completing the dtmfdial MATLAB function.
