Introduction and Objectives
This plan describes the framework used to provide safe, effective medical equipment to patients
in the University of Virginia Medical Center and the University of Virginia Transitional Care
Hospital(collectively identified as University of Virginia Medical Facilities, UVAMF). The
Medical Center and the Transitional Care Hospital are separately accredited by The Joint
Commission.
The objective of the Medical Equipment Management Program is to reduce and/or eliminate the
risk potential to our patients and staff and ultimately, to improve the delivery and efficacy of
patient care through staff training and through best practices in the selection, operation,
maintenance and support of all medical equipment.
Program Scope
The Medical Equipment Management Program encompasses all diagnostic, therapeutic, and
analytical equipment used within the UVAMF , whether the equipment be owned, leased, rented,
obtained for evaluation or demonstration, or supplied by a physician.
The Program includes the following components:
A process for the selection and acquisition of medical equipment
Physicians, nurses, and technologists who are most knowledgeable about a
