On the right track for a PhD
Research for his PhD involved a lot of train journeys for Dr Graeme
McLay. He took to the tracks to investigate whether railway companies'
efforts to communicate with their passengers in the late 1990s were
effective. Transport still remains important in his life; he now works as a
Roads Network Strategy Officer for East Dunbartonshire Council.
Scotsman Graeme started off by studying an undergraduate degree in
Philosophy with Psychology at the University of Glasgow. He then stayed
on to take a master's in Information Technology. "Towards the end of the
course, we had a visit from a careers advisor who had difficulty
suggesting options for the future. Taking a PhD seemed a good idea; I
looked through the research list and, right at the bottom, I spotted the
opportunity in Southampton."
