ABSTRACT
A channeloptimized vector quantizer (COVQ) scheme
that exploits the channel softdecision information is pro
posed. The scheme is designed for stationary memory
less Gaussian and GaussMarkov sources transmitted over
BPSKmodulated additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN)
or Rayleigh fading channels. It is demonstrated that cod
ing gains of up to 2 dB can be achieved at low channel
signaltonoise ratios over COVQ systems designed for dis
crete (harddecision demodulated) channels. Finally, this
scheme is compared with the soft Hadamard column de
coder of Skoglund and Hedelin.
