1. GlueX Physics
In physics, the term "elementary particle" means that they are fundamental particles and do not
consist of other particles, in other words they have "no size". The electron, for example, which is
known to all, is an elementary particle. All matter, as we know it, consists of only two kinds of
elementary particles, electrons and quarks. The latter combine into protons and neutrons to form
the nucleus of the atom while the electrons form orbits around the nucleus. However, while
electrons can exist as free particles, quarks do not and can only be found bound in pairs or
triplets. This phenomenon is known as "confinement" and it remains one of the outstanding
problems to understand in the theory of subatomic physics. A nice short article for the general

outlines the physics and need for GlueX and was written by the then Spokesmen. Currently, the
spokesmen of GlueX are Dr. Curtis Meyer and Dr. George Lolos, since Dr. Dzierba's retirement
in 2007.
In 2005, the DOE formed an international committee of experts to review the physics and
technology of the JLab Energy Upgrade. The Committee identified GlueX as an experiment of
"discovery potential", meaning it may lead to a Nobel Prize, a necessary condition for the DOE
to approve an Upgrade of US$ 350M and GlueX/Hall-D that will cost in excess of US$ 80M.
