As economic globalization unrelentingly pushes
individualism and competitiveness, we are torn
from our ties with family, culture and traditional
spirituality that constituted the normal fabric of
life in pre-modern times. We adapt to this social
dislocation by concocting the best substitutes for a
sustaining wholeness. Addiction is providing this
substitute for more and more of us.
Professor Emeritus Bruce Alexander has researched
the addiction field since joining the psychology
department at Simon Fraser University in 1970.
