Building the future in the Middle East
Dr Osama Daoud has just started work as Technical Manager on
Jeddah's new $7billion airport in Saudi Arabia. It is the latest in a
series of challenges in construction for the Egyptian civil engineer who
began his career by studying in both his native Cairo and Southampton.
Osama followed in his father's footsteps when he decided to become
an engineer; Mr Daoud senior had worked in construction with the
British in Cairo in the 1940s. His son enrolled at the prestigious Ain
Shams University in the city to study civil engineering, then remained
for three years as a teaching assistant before moving overseas. "I
always wanted to study for a higher degree in the UK as I had been
there several times and liked the country and its people," he explains.
His PhD application was also accepted by Imperial College, but Osama
opted for the south coast alternative, when he learned he would not
have to first complete a master's degree at Southampton. "It was a
