Summary: Volume 5, Issue 2 Summer/Fall 2005
The Materials Research Laboratory at UCSB has
been granted a six-year $20,520,000 renewal through the
MRSEC (Materials Research Science and Engineering
Center) program of the NSF Division of Materials
Research. For the last 13 years the mission of the MRL at
UCSB has been to conduct cutting edge, multidiscipli-
nary materials research and education. It is dedicated to
pushing the frontiers of complexity in materials science
with an emphasis on systems in which self-assembly and
multiple length-scales play an important role. The
renewal will continue the history of research and
outreach excellence that has been a hallmark of the center
since its inception in 1993.
The MRL brings together interdisciplinary teams
of scientists and engineers who share a mutual interest in
promoting research, training and education through the
study of materials that are both chemically and structur-
ally complex.
The NSF renewal funding will support four new
