Peter Dobson, who was just about to dash off to lecture at the Institute
for Theoretical Physics at Trieste when I first contacted him, has one of
the most varied jobs you can imagine: apart from being a lecturer in
engineering, he is also one of the initiators of Begbroke Science Park,
where research and entrepreneurship are combined to translate new
discoveries into commercial products. And if that wasn't enough of a
challenge, he is also working as the national advisor on nanotechnology
to the Research Councils in the UK!
When asked about a typical working day, he said: "There is no typical day
in my life! I might be lecturing, showing a group of visitors from another
country around, meeting a minister or top civil servant, discussing results
with post-dos or post-grads, assessing new patent ideas, including my
own, writing papers, refereeing grant applications, developing new
courses in Knowledge Transfer, dealing with problems on the site..."
He admits to having been curious and fascinated by science from an early
