Abstract
Recent increases in computer graphics hardware speed has spawned an interest in the visualization of large data sets. The
amount of information in these data sets, however, has also increased as the metrology equipment for acquiring the data sets
has improved. This is also true for DOE based activities involving the automatic photo-realistic 3D modeling of hazardous
environments. When viewing these large models, the frame-rate of even the fastest computers can be extremely low. For
these reasons, methods to lower the resolution of the model, and thus increase the frame-rate, are desired. Recent research
