Summary: Dr. Terry Unter
President and Chief Executive Officer,
Mintera Corporation
School of Electronics and Computer Science
Building the next generation of semiconducors
Dr Terry Unter first became fascinated by microelectronics at the age of
14. Silicon chip technology was in its infancy but full of promise. He read
about how the revolution of integrated circuits and semiconductors could
transform computing and was determined to get involved.
Southampton was an obvious choice after school. "It was one of the few
universities to have the facilities to make integrated circuits," he explains.
"Of course, at that time, only a few universities specialised in
microelectronics and fibre optics, it was a pioneer in the field." During his
BSc in Electronic Engineering, Terry was permitted to take some courses
from the Electronic Science degree, especially in physics and materials
science, which broadened his knowledge of this new and expanding area
of study.
He was happy to stay on for a PhD at Southampton and worked on
diffusion mechanisms in silicon, examining potential ways to improve the
manufacture of these vital components: "I really enjoyed my PhD which
