am pleased that you are considering the University of California at Santa Barbara as
a place to pursue graduate work in mathematics. The purpose of this brochure is to
help you decide whether it is the right place for you. We believe that UCSB is an
excellent choice for students who are seeking a vigorous, student-friendly department
on a campus which has a growing research profile and which enjoys a spectacular
physical setting.
Mathematics is at the center of science and modern technology. New advances in
our understanding of the universe,of the information contained within the genome,and
of the nature of physical materials used in computers depend more and more upon ad-
vanced mathematics.There is a great need for mathematicians to develop the mathemat-
ics of the twenty-first century, to communicate new mathematical ideas to professional
users and to explain the fundamentals of mathematics to the ever-increasing number of
students who need training in mathematics to pursue their careers.
CORE MATHEMATICS is often pursued for its own intrinsic beauty. We have strong core groups in low-dimensional
