Comments for U of R Strategic Planning Facilitation Committee Background to the Community Research Unit

Summary: Comments for U of R Strategic Planning Facilitation Committee
Background to the Community Research Unit:
Mission:
The Community Research Unit will function collaboratively as a partnership between
community-based organizations and university faculty and students. It will provide independent,
participatory research support in response to needs expressed by community-based
organizations with a view toward building capacity and enhancing our communities' quality of
life.
Some of the roles of the CRU are to:
- build bridges between the community and university
- to serve as a research resource for our community
- to encourage reciprocal learning and engagement
- lead the Arts CARES program
Community-based research projects
Since August 2008, we've taken on four research projects with different community-
based organizations in Regina. The community's need for high quality and rigorous research is
clear. These projects have the common element of addressing a research need for a
community-based organization that can be directly applied to their operations and goals. The
CRU acts as a facilitator in these projects, linking the organizations with Arts faculty and
students who perform and advise the research with equal participation by community partners.
