The remit of the mathematical sciences
programme focuses on the fundamental research
within the whole of the mathematical sciences,
including Pure and Applied Mathematics, Statistics
and Mathematical aspects of Operational Research.
The EPSRC portfolio supports a large variety of
mathematical research under this programme.
Research, societal and economic impact
There is a perception that of all the areas of fundamental science that EPSRC funds
the mathematical sciences are unlikely to have a major impact on the technology
readiness levels, however, mathematical scientists are becoming more aware of the
need to demonstrate applicability where appropriate. However, there are many areas
that are directly applicable; the Engaging Maths brochure highlighted several examples
where the mathematical sciences were having a direct impact on areas such as
security, telecommunications, finance, industry, transport and medicine.
Research impact within the area of Mathematical Sciences can vary quite considerably from a small group of
