Summary: Convocation Speaking Draft p. 1 of 5
Convocation Welcoming Remarks
Jerry MacArthur Hultin
October 22, 2008
If this were 1858, as President of this great institution, I would be saying today:
Welcome to Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn
If this were 1978, I would be saying:
Welcome to Polytechnic Institute of New York
Today, it's 2008, and I am saying:
Welcome to Polytechnic Institute of New York University
Poly's Consistency of Mission
For more than 130 of its 150 plus years, we have been known as Polytechnic
Institute. In addition to our name, there is a consistent thread in the fabric of this
university that extends from the very days of our founding in 1854 to today. For from
1854, Polytechnic Institute has taught its students to grasp the power of science and
technology and wield it for the sake of a better society. From 1854, Polytechnic has
encouraged its faculty to use science and technology to create a better life. From 1854,
Polytechnic Institute graduates--our alumni--have changed the world. And today's
convocation is being watched by Poly and NYU alumni around the world on our global
web cast.
