Gabriele Wienhausen serves as the Associate Dean in the Biological Sciences Dean's Office.
She recently completed a 26 page document for the division of Biological Sciences entitled:
A COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY FOUNDATION AND FUTRE:
Achieving a culture of inclusion in UC San Diego's Division of Biological Sciences
Addressed to all faculty, staff, and students in the Division, it contains descriptions of current
and future programs aimed to increase underrepresented minority inclusion and to create a
culturally welcoming and professionally enriching environment. This letter calls for faculty, staff,
and students in the Division to be responsible for and committed to developing and
implementing programs that create and sustain a culture of inclusion.
Gabriele has initiated a wide variety of programs for outreach to both undergraduate and
graduate students, as well as working to transform the way that faculty search committees think
about diversity. She has built diversity awareness into TA training, the Division's Postdoctoral
Fellow Leadership initiates, and the graduate student outreach efforts. There has been a 300%
increase in minority students who elect to attend UCSD for their graduate education in
Biological Sciences in the past two years.
