Summary: 1. Abstract
Ray tracersthatrenderCSGmodelsshouldconsider
issuesof regularizationandnumericalaccuracy.The
specialcaseof rays originatingon surfaces(shadow
probes,reflections,andrefractions)presenta regular_
ization problem that is significant--evenin ray
tracerswhich are not explicitly basedon ttre CSG
scheme.An analysisof Orisproblemyieldsa better
solutionthan the epsilontestsincorporatedin most
ray tracers.
2. Introduction
Ray Hacingis a simpleand straightforwardmethod
of renderingimagesof solidsdescribedby the Con_
sEuctiveSolid Geometryscheme. This is because
the problem of Booleancombinationsof solids is
reducedto onedimension.
Two complicationsarise, however. Set operations
on solids shouldbe regularized[Requichag0],and
finite-precisionmachinearithmeticintroduceserror
into the ray-intersection calculation. Simple
