Textbook. J.E. Humphreys, Linear Algebraic Groups, Graduate Texts in Mathematics no. 21, Springer-
Verlag, 1975.
Course outline. The main content of the course will be from Chapters II, IV, and VX of the textbook.
We will cover selected topics from Chapter I as we need them, and if time permits at the end of the semester,
we may cover a few topics from Chapter XI.
Varieties, algebraic groups, quotients (Chap. I, II, IV) 23 weeks
Semisimple, nilpotent, solvable (Chap. VI, VII) 34 weeks
Borel subgroups and maximal tori (Chap. VIII, IX) 34 weeks
Reductive groups (Chap. X) 23 weeks
Classification & other topics (Chap. XI) 2 weeks
Homework. Homework exercises will be due approximately once every two weeks. All the homework
exercises will be posted on my webpage. It is likely that not every homework question will be graded.
Exams. There will be no timed exams. In lieu of a final exam, the last homework assignment will be due
