ince the discovery of carbon nano-
tubes (CNTs) by Iijima in 1991, a num-
ber of potential applications for these
remarkable materials have been envisioned.
One of the most promising uses for these
nanomaterials is as reinforcements for high
strength/stiffness/toughness composites.
This is because their mechanical properties
are considerably better than those of con-
ventional fibrous materials. Theoretical pre-
dictions show that CNTs must possess ultra-
high strengths, as high as 300 GPa for single
walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs),1
