Title: Impact of the Recession on Long-Term Disability

Abstract
At the Annual Meeting of the CIA in June, I was part of a panel (see the
description below*) discussing the impact of the economic downturn on dis-
ability insurance experience. My part of the talk included some regression
analysis using the data available. The presentation was so popular that the
CIA asked us back to repeat it at the next meeting in November. I'll cover
my results from our talk and provide some background to provide context
for non-actuaries. The study results highlight some interesting data issues
that would apply to many statistical studies.
*How deep might the current recession get, and what impact might we
expect in terms of LTD experience trends in the coming months? To an-
swer this question, our panelists Peter B. Douglas, Ken Fraser and Jeffrey
L. Schuh will explore: the evolution of the current recession; the historical
