IOO project: Modeling of different types of waveguides for spiral-shaped MZIs

Summary: IOO project: Modeling of different types of
waveguides for spiral-shaped MZIs
The goal of the PhD project of Marcel Hoekman is to realise a multi-sensing array by
placing multiple spiral-shaped Mach-Zehnder Interferometers in series to form a
sensing branch, and to place several sensing branches in parallel, as is illustrated in
Figure 1. In such an arrangment it is possible to use a single light source for several
sensors. Each sensor will contain an electro-optical modulator, which makes it
possible to separately interrogate and accurately read-out each sensor in the same
sensing branch. Figure 2 shows the layout of one such spiral-shaped MZI.

Figure 1. Top-view of a sensor array of spiral-shaped Mach-Zehnder Interferometers. Sections for
electro-optical modulation (not displayed) lead to a larger sensitivity and the possibility to read out all
sensors in a sensor branch separately.
Figure 2. Parametrisation of spiral shaped MZI implemented in the mask editor MaskEngineer of
PhoeniX; the one MZI branch is marked blue, and the other one is marked orange.
