Over the years, Dr Darryl Gove has combined his love of science with creative
pursuits. While working hard for his PhD at Southampton, he relaxed with friends
by playing guitar in a band and performing the works of Gilbert and Sullivan with
fellow students. Now, as a problem-solving computer scientist in California, he
finds time to write books. And he has lately picked up his guitar again to join a
band of parents at his sons' school. "It helps to encourage the children that
music isn't just something you do in class everyone can do it," he says.
Darryl has now lived and worked in Silicon Valley for 11 years with his wife
Jennifer, another Southampton PhD alumnus, and children Aaron, Timothy and
Emma. He enjoys the daily challenges of working with state-of-the-art
technology at Oracle. It all started with a maths degree. "I was always good at
the subject at school and enjoyed my undergraduate degree at Southampton but
decided to do something different after graduating and embarked on a Masters
in Operational Research (OR)," he explains. "Southampton is one of the best
places for the subject you learn how to analyse complex systems using
