Towards the end of his life, Pierre de Fermat (16011665) wrote in the
margin of a book:
I have discovered a truely remarkable proof of this theorem, but this
margin is too small to write it down.
After more than 300 years, when the proof was finally written, it did take a
little more than a margin to write.
