Photography as a Tool for Facilitating Reflective Practice
in Social Work Field Placements

Photovoice (Wang & Burris, 1997) has been employed as both a research method and grassroots `sounding
board' to communicate one's place in the world and experiences via photography. This approach has also
been described as a strategy that gives a voice to people who ordinarily would not be heard. Similarly, it can
be a unique way for social work students to express their perspectives and reflections on their practicum
experiences, social issues, and the profession of social work.
