The Berkshires are culturally so very rich and the museum team feels extremely fortunate to be living and working here
in the midst of our intellectually dynamic Williams campus. During the academic year, we work in an environment
surrounded by exceptional individuals, committed to teaching and driven in their scholarly work by a life-long quest
for knowledge. In the winter, the days are shorter and after work we head home to get cozy and read by our wood stoves.
In the summer, our population swells with second home owners feasting on the creative offerings of the Williamstown
Theatre Festival, the Clark, MASS MoCA, and, of course, WCMA. By serving as a crossroads for the community, the
Williams College Museum of Art reconnects us to the many communities of which we are part--local, regional, national,
and global. In short, WCMA brings the world to Williams. We do this by presenting art and ideas that challenge per-
spectives and give our visitors a lot to think about. We take them "beyond the familiar," the title of one of this past year's
most thought-provoking exhibitions.
In FY 2009, critical consideration of the complex word "community" was central to our exhibitions, public programs, and
acquisitions. One catalyst was the major acquisition in 2006 of The Chinese, 120 photographs by the contemporary Chinese
artist Liu Zheng. His work captures a decade of extraordinary change that has forever altered the social, political, and cul-
tural structures in China. The powerful presentation of this entire series raised questions about how the very definition
of what it means to be Chinese is in flux. We began to think about how the subject of community has been addressed in the
medium of photography since the nineteenth century. Can an artist capture the national character of a people? How might
