Division of Student Affairs Spotlight: Dr. Kimberly James
Dr. Kimberly A. James is a licensed psychologist who is the Assistant Director/Outreach Director at
Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). Dr. James started her role at CAPS in 2005 and prior
to this role she was the Clinical Director of Multicultural Services and Outreach at Counseling and
Consultation Services at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she supervised a team of 9
She earned her B.S. from Howard University, M.S.Ed. from the University of Pennsylvania and Ph.D
from the State University of New York at Buffalo. She has 21 years of experience in a variety of
settings that include, high schools, universities, community mental health agencies and inpatient
psychiatric and Veterans Affairs hospitals.
Areas of interest include Outreach & Consultation, Organizational Management, Multicultural
Populations, Relationships & Dialogues, Body Image & Self-Esteem, Student Athletes, Health &
Fitness, Supervision/Training and Interpersonal Psychotherapy. Dr. James enjoys the opportunity to
connect with students and support their overall well-being throughout their academic career. Her
commitment to health and fitness has led to increased consultation with the UH Athletics,
membership in the Science & Community Partnership of the Texas Obesity Research Center at UH
and committing to weight training four days a week. She was featured in the June 2011 issue of
Health and Fitness Sports Magazine.
Additionally, Dr. James serves on the Executive Board of the Houston Psychological Association
