Summary: Santuario extramurano
A breve distanza dalla porta di NO (Contrada Petraro),
lungo la strada antica proveniente dalla valle del Belice,
e sovrastato dalle mura, è stato scoperto un grande
deposito votivo riferibile al culto di Demetra. I
numerosi materiali votivi e le ceramiche rinvenute
indicano che il santuario -- un thesmophorion (area
di culto delle divinità ctonie) -- fu in uso dalla fine
del VI al III sec. a.C.
Santuary outside the city walls
Notfarfromthenorth-westgate(contradaPetraro),
along the ancient road coming from the Belice valley
and below the walls, a great votive deposit connected
to Demeters cult was found. The abundant votive
objects and the pottery indicate that the sanctuary -- a
thesmophorion, a sanctuary for chthonian goddesses -- was
in use from the end of 6th
to the 3rd
century BC
