In the sixth form, Jan Peters decided she wanted to be a science
journalist. Now, after degrees in chemistry, oceanography and
engineering, she has achieved that ambition and much more. She runs
her own company making connections between scientists and policy
makers and promoting knowledge transfer www.katalytik.co.uk
"At school, I was good at subjects across the board so it was almost a
case of sticking a pin into the UCAS book when it came to choosing a
university and a course," she explains. "I decided on Plymouth because it
was near the sea and I liked sailing it was also the right distance from
my home in Manchester. I chose to study Chemistry and Oceanography
because it looked interesting."
After her first degree, she changed tack to take a master's in molecular
science at the, then, Thames Poly which included a six month industrial
placement at Thorn EMI. "I was now learning about clean rooms, silicon
and electronic devices and found it fascinating. It prompted me to stay in
