Summary: POST-BACCALAUREATE REQUIREMENTS FOR
MUSIC THERAPY EQUIVALENCY
The student must have a Bachelor's Degree in Music or Music
Education before applying for the Music Therapy Equivalency
program. The student must complete a minimum of the following
course requirements in order to earn the Music Therapy Equivalency.
Music Therapy Core Courses (Recommended in the following sequence)
MUSI 5400 Principles of Music Therapy (Fall of 1st Year)
MUSI 5440 Music Skills for Therapists (Spring of 1st Year)
MUSI 5410 Psychology of Music (Spring of 1st Year)
MUSI 5420 Influence of Music on Behavior (Fall 2nd Year)
MUSI 5450 Music for Exceptional Children Therapy (Spring of 2nd Year)
MUSI 5430 Clinical Experience (Spring of 2nd Year)
The student must accumulate a total of 180 clinical contact hours to become eligible for a
music therapy internship at the end of the academic coursework. Therefore, the student
must enroll in the MUSI 6000 course each semester in order to accumulate the clinical
contact hours. The music therapy internship is the culminating clinical course (MUSI
4022) and must be completed before the equivalency is conferred. The student may
attend any music therapy internship program that is approved by the American Music
Therapy Association (AMTA). The completion of the internship takes approximately 6
