Summary: Non-traditional Processing of
Polymeric Materials
NSF-DMR05-20415IRG-1
New strategies for processing of plastics
would lead to significantly lower energy
consumption and less reliance on foreign
oil. UCSB and Eindhoven researchers
have recently developed a new approach to
polymer materials that can be processed in
non-traditional ways. To accomplish this,
supramolecular polymers consisting of
polymer chains functionalized with multiple
hydrogen bonding have been prepared that
can be processed at low temperatures due
to the reversible breaking of non-covalent
backbone linkages. In contrast, at room
temperature these linkages are strongly
bound producing an elastic solid.
