Many phenomena in nature and engineering
happen simultaneously on rather diverse spa-
tial and temporal scales. In other words, they
exhibit a multi-scale character. A special
numerical multilevel technique associated
with a particular hierarchical data structure
is adaptive mesh refinement (AMR). This
