Summary: Lobstermen and researchers are engaging in
cooperative research, especially to collect `real
time'informationonLongIslandSound'slobster
fishery. Summer2002wasthefirsttimethatthe
lobster industry was able to use the new
diagnosticservicethathasbeenestablishedas
part of the rapid response system for marine
disease outbreaks. This laboratory began under
a grant from New York State Assembly in direct
response to the lobster fishery disaster of 1999.
In mid-August 2002, several lobstermen became
suspicious when they noticed lobsters showing
symptomsofweakness,withashortshelflife.
This incident began as the lobstermen were in the
last few weeks of the spring/summer season. A
fewlobstermencoordinatedwithNewYorkState
DECtocollectsamplesofdyinglobstersfrom
