We introduce a new type of multiple zeta functions, which we call bilateral zeta functions, analogous to the Barnes zeta functions. The bilateral zeta function is a periodic function and shares certain basic properties of Barnes zeta function. Especially, we prove that the bilateral zeta function has a nice Fourier series expansion and the Barnes zeta function can be expressed as a finite sum of bilateral zeta functions. By these properties of the bilateral zeta functions, We obtain simple proofs of some formulas, for example the reflection formula for the multiple gamma function, the inversion formula of the Dedekind eta function, Ramanujan's formula, Fourier expansion of the Barnes zeta function and multiple Iseki's formula.

    CERN Preprints

    2011-01-01

It is well-known that spatial averaging can be realized (in space or frequency domain) using algorithms whose complexity does not depend on the size or shape of the filter. These fast algorithms are generally referred to as constant-time or O(1) algorithms in the image processing literature. Along with the spatial filter, the edge-preserving bilateral filter [bilateralFilter] involves an additional range kernel. This is used to restrict the averaging to those neighborhood pixels whose intensity are similar or close to that of the pixel of interest. The range kernel operates by acting on the pixel intensities. This makes the averaging process non-linear and computationally intensive, especially when the spatial filter is large. In this paper, we show how the O(1) averaging algorithms can be leveraged for realizing the bilateral filter in constant-time, by using trigonometric range kernels. This is done by generalizing the idea in [bilateralFilter_fast] of using polynomial range kernels. The class of trigonomet...

    CERN Preprints

    2009-01-01

The idea of this paper is an advanced game concept. This concept is expected to model non-monetary bilateral cooperations between self-interested agents. Such non-monetary cases are social cooperations like allocation of high level jobs or sexual relationships among humans. In a barter double auction, there is a big amount of agents. Every agent has a vector of parameters which specifies his demand and a vector which specifies his offer. Two agents can achieve a commitment through barter exchange. The subjective satisfaction level (a number between 0% and 100%) of an agent is as high as small is the distance between his demand and the accepted offer. This paper introduces some facets of this complex game concept.

We discuss the possible candidates for conformally invariant random non-self-crossing curves which begin and end on the boundary of a multiply connected planar domain, and which satisfy a Markovian-type property. We consider both, the case when the curve connects a boundary component to itself (chordal), and the case when the curve connects two different boundary components (bilateral). We establish appropriate extensions of Loewner's equation to multiply connected domains for the two cases. We show that a curve in the domain induces a motion on the boundary and that this motion is enough to first recover the motion of the moduli of the domain and then, second, the curve in the interior. For random curves in the interior we show that the induced random motion on the boundary is not Markov if the domain is multiply connected, but that the random motion on the boundary together with the random motion of the moduli forms a Markov process. In the chordal case, we show that this Markov process satisfies Brownian scaling and discuss how this limits the possible conformally invariant random non-self-crossing curves. We show that the possible candidates are labeled by a real constant and a function homogeneous of degree minus one which describes the interaction of the random curve with the boundary. We show that the random curve has the locality property if the interaction term vanishes and the real parameter equals six.

Detection of symmetry is vital to problem solving. Most of the problems of computer vision and computer graphics and machine intelligence in general, can be reduced to symmetry detection problem. Unstructured search problem can also be looked upon from symmetry detection point of view. Unstructured search can be thought as searching a binary string satisfying some search condition in an unsorted list of binary strings. In this paper unstructured search problem is reduced to function bilateral symmetry detection problem with polynomial overhead in terms of the size of the input. 3. How to Grow an Organism Inside-Out: Evolution of an internal skeleton from an external skeleton in bilateral organisms

    Quantitative Biology (arXiv)

    Eric Werner

    2012-07-16

An intriguing unanswered question about the evolution of bilateral animals with internal skeletons is how an internal skeleton evolved in the first place. Computational modeling of the development of bilateral symmetric organisms suggests an answer to this question. Our hypothesis is that an internal skeleton may have evolved from a bilaterally symmetric ancestor with an external skeleton. By growing the organism inside-out an external skeleton becomes an internal skeleton. Our hypothesis is supported by a computational theory of bilateral symmetry that allows us to model and simulate this process. Inside-out development is achieved by an orientation switch. Given the development of two bilateral founder cells that generate a bilateral organism, a mutation that reverses the internal mirror orientation of those bilateral founder cells leads to inside-out development. The new orientation is epigenetically inherited by all progeny. A key insight is that each cell contained in the newly evolved organism with the internal skeleton develops according to the very same downstream developmental control network that directs the development of its exoskeletal ancestor. The networks and their genomes are are identical, but the interpretation is different because of the cell's inverted orientation. The result is inside-out bilateral symmetric development generating an inside-out organism with an internal skeleton.

A direct implementation of the bilateral filter [1] requires O(\\sigma_s^2) operations per pixel, where \\sigma_s is the (effective) width of the spatial kernel. A fast implementation of the bilateral filter was recently proposed in [2] that required O(1) operations per pixel with respect to \\sigma_s. This was done by using trigonometric functions for the range kernel of the bilateral filter, and by exploiting their so-called shiftability property. In particular, a fast implementation of the Gaussian bilateral filter was realized by approximating the Gaussian range kernel using raised cosines. Later, it was demonstrated in [3] that this idea could be extended to a larger class of filters, including the popular non-local means filter [4]. As already observed in [2], a flip side of this approach was that the run time depended on the width \\sigma_r of the range kernel. For an image with (local) intensity variations in the range [0,T], the run time scaled as O(T^2/\\sigma^2_r) with \\sigma_r. This made it difficult t...

  17. A Clifford Dyadic Superfield from Bilateral Interactions of Geometric Multispin Dirac Theory

    HEP - Theory (arXiv)

    William Pezzaglia; Alfred Differ

    1993-11-09

Multivector quantum mechanics utilizes wavefunctions which are Clifford aggregates (e.g. sum of scalar, vector, bivector). This is equivalent to multi- spinors constructed of Dirac matrices, with the representation independent form of the generators geometrically interpreted as the basis vectors of spacetime. Multiple generations of particles appear as left ideals of the algebra, coupled only by now-allowed right-side applied (dextral) operations. A generalized bilateral (two-sided operation) coupling is proposed which includes the above mentioned dextrad field, and the spin-gauge interaction as particular cases. This leads to a new principle of {\\it poly-dimensional covariance}, in which physical laws are invariant under the reshuffling of coordinate geometry. Such a multigeometric superfield equation is proposed, which is sourced by a bilateral current. In order to express the superfield in representation and coordinate free form, we introduce Eddington E-F {\\it double-frame} numbers. Symmetric tensors can now be represented as 4D ``dyads", which actually are elements of a global 8D Clifford algebra. As a restricted example, the dyadic field created by the Greider-Ross multivector current (of a Dirac electron) describes both electromagnetic and Morris- Greider gravitational interactions. A study of the non linear modes of a two degree of freedom mechanical system with bilateral elastic stop is considered. The issue related to the non-smoothness of the impact force is handled through a regularization technique. In order to obtain the Nonlinear Normal Mode (NNM), the harmonic balance method with a large number of harmonics, combined with the asymptotic numerical method, is used to solve the regularized problem. These methods are present in the software "package" MANLAB. The results are validated from periodic orbits obtained analytically in the time domain by direct integration of the non regular problem. The two NNMs starting respectively from the two linear normal modes of the associated underlying linear system are discussed. The energy-frequency plot is used to present a global vision of the behavior of the modes. The dynamics of the modes are also analyzed comparing each periodic orbits and modal lines. 2010-01-01

In this paper we show that when individuals in a bipartite network exclusively choose partners and exchange valued goods with their partners, then there exists a set of exchanges that are pair-wise stable. Pair-wise stability implies that no individual breaks her partnership and no two neighbors in the network can form a new partnership while breaking other partnerships if any so that at least one of them improves her payoff and the other one does at least as good. We consider a general class of continuous, strictly convex and strongly monotone preferences over bundles of goods for individuals. Thus, this work extends the general equilibrium framework from markets to networks with exclusive exchanges. We present the complete existence proof using the existence of a generalized stable matching in \\cite{Generalized-Stable-Matching}. The existence proof can be extended to problems in social games as in \\cite{Matching-Equilibrium} and \\cite{Social-Games}.

We consider the electrical signals recorded from a subdural ECoG grid of electrodes placed on the pial surface of the brain for chronic evaluation of epileptic patients before surgical resection. A simple and computationally fast method to analyze the inter-ictal phase synchrony between such electrodes is introduced and developed with the aim of detecting and localizing the foci of the epileptic events. We evaluate the method by comparing the results of surgery to the localization predicted here. We find an indication of good correspondence between the success or failure in the surgery and the agreement between our identification and the regions actually operated on.

    2012-01-01

A brain wide association study (BWAS) based on the logistic regression was first developed and applied to a large population of epilepsy patients (168) and healthy controls (136). It was found that the most significant links associated with epilepsy are those bilateral links with regions mainly belonging to the default mode network and subcortex, such as amygdala, fusiform gyrus, inferior temporal gyrus, hippocampus, temporal pole, parahippocampal gyrus, insula, middle occipital gyrus, cuneus. These links were found to have much higher odd ratios than other links, and all of them showed reduced functional couplings in patients compared with controls. Interestingly, with the increasing of the seizure onset frequency or duration of illness, the functional connection between these bilateral regions became further reduced. On the other hand, as a functional compensation and brain plasticity, connections of these bilateral regions to other brain regions were abnormally enhanced and became even much stronger with t...

    2008-01-01

By considering the features of the airport runway image filtering, an improved bilateral filtering method was proposed which can remove noise with edge preserving. Firstly the steerable filtering decomposition is used to calculate the sub-band parameters of 4 orients, and the texture feature matrix is then obtained from the sub-band local median energy. The texture similar, the spatial closer and the color similar functions are used to filter the image. The effect of the weighting function parameters is qualitatively analyzed also. In contrast with the standard bilateral filter and the simulation results for the real airport runway image show that the multilateral filtering is more effective than the standard bilateral filtering.

We show an efficient purification protocol in solid-state qubits by replacing the usual bilateral CNOT gate by the bilateral iSWAP gate. We also show that this replacement can be applied to breeding and hashing protocols, which are useful for quantum state purification. These replacements reduce the number of fragile and cumbersome two-qubit operations, making more feasible quantum-information-processing with solid-state qubits. As examples, we also present quantitative analyses for the required time to perform state purification using either superconducting or semiconducting qubits.

In particular, we show that while to any nonlocal game there naturally corresponds a unique Bell inequality, the converse is not true. As an illustration of the method we present a number of nonlocal games that admit better odds when played using quantum resources
