1st Roman Young Researchers Meeting Proceedings

  Physics (arXiv)

Summary: During the last few decades scientists have been able to test the bases of the physics paradigms, where the quantum mechanics has to match the cosmological scales. Between the extremes of this scenario, biological phenomena and their complexity take place, challenging the laws we observe in the atomic and sub-atomic world. In order to explore the details of this world, new huge experimental facilities are under construction. These projects involve people coming from several countries and give physicists the opportunity to work together with chemists, biologists and other scientists. The Roman Young Researchers Meeting is a conference, organised by Ph. D. students and young postdocs connected to the Roman area. It is aimed primarily at graduate students and post-docs, working in physics. The 1st conference has been held on the 21st of July 2009 at the University of Roma Tor Vergata. It was organised in three sessions, devoted to Astrophysics and Cosmology, Soft and Condensed Matter Physics and Theoretical and Particle Physics. In this proceeding we collect the contributions which have been presented and discussed during the meeting, according to the specific topics treated.

1st Workshop of Astronomy and Astrophysics for Students

  Astrophysics (arXiv)

Summary: The "1st Workshop of Astronomy and Astrophysics for Students" was organized with the purpose of bringing togheter scientific Institutions involved in Astrophysical researches, of the Campania region and beyond. In this context the expression "Astronomy and Astrophysics" was used in its broadest meaning, i.e. including all topics related to the study of the Universe: the Sun and the Solar system, Stars, Galaxies, Cosmology, Astroparticles and Astronomical Technologies, with the belief that all scientific areas would benefit from interaction with related, if not strictly connected, research environments. The goal of the Workshop was to offer Students (undergraduate, graduate, PhD and Post-Docs) the opportunity to share their expertise with colleagues studying and working in other Universities and/or Research Institutes involved in research programs of astrophysical interests. At the same time the Workshop was intended to be a place were the partecipants could, possibly for the first time, promote the work done at any level of their educational and/or professional growth. Fluctuation-Driven 1st-Order Isotropic-to-Tetrahedratic Phase Transition

  Condensed Matter (arXiv)

Summary: Motivated in part by recent experiments on liquid crystals with bent-core molecules, which are observed to display a spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking, we introduce a field theory of a 3rd-rank tensor order parameter T^{ijk} to describe the isotropic-to-tetrahedratic phase transition that we predict to take place in these materials. We study the critical properties of the corresponding phase transition and find that this transition, continuous at the mean-field level, is generically driven 1st-order by thermal fluctuations.

An Evidential Interpretation of the 1st and 2nd Laws of Thermodynamics

  CERN Preprints

Summary: I argue here that both the 1st and 2nd laws of thermodynamics, generally understood to be quintessentially physical in nature, can be equally well described as being about the flow dynamics of information without the need to invoke physical manifestations for information. This involves developing two distinct, yet related, forms of bookkeeping: one pertaining to what physicists generally understand as information per se, which I call purely combinatoric information; and the other pertaining to a version of what physicists understand as energy, which I call evidential information, for reasons to be made clear. I illustrate both sets of books with application to a simple coin-tossing (binomial) experiment. I then show that the physical quantity temperature (T) linking those two forms of bookkeeping together in physics has a familiar, but surprising, interpretation in this setting: the direct informational analogue of T turns out to be what we would in ordinary English call the evidence.

The 1st Fermi LAT SNR Catalog: the Impact of Interstellar Emission Modeling

  CERN Preprints

Summary: Galactic interstellar emission contributes substantially to Fermi LAT observations in the Galactic plane, the location of the majority of supernova remnants (SNRs). To explore some systematic effects on SNRs' properties caused by interstellar emission modeling, we have developed a method comparing the official LAT interstellar emission model results to eight alternative models. We created the eight alternative Galactic interstellar models by varying a few input parameters to GALPROP, namely the height of the cosmic ray propagation halo, cosmic ray source distribution in the Galaxy, and atomic hydrogen spin temperature. We have analyzed eight representative SNRs chosen to encompass a range of Galactic locations, extensions, and spectral properties using the eight different interstellar emission models. We will present the results and method in detail and discuss the implications for studies such as the 1st Fermi LAT SNR Catalog.

Multivariate Non-Normality in the WMAP 1st Year Data

  CERN Preprints

Summary: The extraction of cosmological parameters from microwave background observations relies on specific assumptions about the statistical properties of the data, in particular that the p-point distributions of temperature fluctuations are jointly-normal. Using a battery of statistical tests, we assess the multivariate Gaussian nature of the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) 1st year data. The statistics we use fall into three classes which test different aspects of joint-normality: the first set assess the normality of marginal (one-point) distributions using familiar univariate methods; the second involves statistics that directly assess joint-normality; and the third explores the evidence of non-linearity in the relationship between variates. We applied these tests to frequency maps, `foreground-cleaned' assembly maps and all-sky CMB-only maps. The assembly maps are of particular interest as when combined with the kp2 mask, we recreate the region used in the computation of the angular power spectrum. ...

Short Decidability Proof for DPDA Language Equivalence via 1st Order Grammar Bisimilarity

  CERN Preprints

Summary: The main aim of the paper is to present a proof of the decidability of language equivalence for deterministic pushdown automata, which is the famous problem solved by G. Senizergues, for which C. Stirling has also derived a primitive recursive complexity upper bound later. The proof presented here is intended to be easily understandable, to use simple ideas, and to avoid technicalities when possible. It is illuminated by a fictional Attacker-Defender game, which also allows to develop an intuition for a sketch of a possible extension to bisimilarity for nondeterministic pushdown automata with restricted use of epsilon-steps (a problem, for which the first proof was also given by G. Senizergues). The framework of (deterministic) 1st order grammars has turned out particularly useful to this aim. It is shown that each such grammar has an algorithmically constructible finite basis for a sound and complete derivation (or proof) system, on which the decision procedure is based.

Addressing learning difficulties in Newtons 1st and 3rd Laws through problem based inquiry using Easy Java Simulation

  CERN Preprints

Summary: We develop an Easy Java Simulation (EJS) model for students to visualize Newtons 1st and 3rd laws, using frictionless constant motion equation and a spring collision equation during impact. Using Physics by Inquiry instructional (PbI) strategy, the simulation and its problem based inquiry worksheet aim to enhance learning of these two Newtonian concepts. We report results from Experimental (N=62 students) and Control (N=67) Groups in 11 multiple choice questions pre and post tests, conducted by three teachers in the school. Results suggest, at 95 percent confidence level, significant improvement for concept of Newtons 1st Law while not so for Newtons 3rd Law. A Focus Group Discussion revealed students confirming the usefulness of the EJS model in visualizing the 1st Law while not so much for the 3rd Law. We speculate the design ideas for constant velocity motion in the computer model coupled with the PbI worksheet did allow for making sense and experiencing of the 1st Law, where traditional pen-paper represen...

Multivariate Non-Normality in the WMAP 1st Year Data

  Astrophysics (arXiv)

Significant departures from normality were found in all the maps. In particular, the kurtosis coefficient, D'Agostino's statistic and bivariate kurtosis calculated from temperature pairs extracted from all the assembly maps were found to be non-normal at 99% confidence level. We found that the results were unaffected by the size of the Galactic cut and were evident on either hemisphere of the CMB sky. The latter suggests that the non-Gaussianity is not simply related to previous claims of north-south asymmetry or localized abnormalities detected through wavelet techniques.

Identifying stellar streams in the 1st RAVE public data release

  Astrophysics (arXiv)

Summary: We searched for and detected stellar streams or moving groups in the solar neighbourhood, using the data provided by the 1st RAVE public data release. This analysis is based on distances to RAVE stars estimated from a color-magnitude relation that was calibrated on Hipparcos stars. Our final sample consists of 7015 stars selected to be within 500 pc of the Sun and to have distance errors better than 25%. Together with radial velocities from RAVE and proper motions from various data bases, there are estimates for all 6 phase-space coordinates of the stars in the sample. We characterize the orbits of these stars through suitable proxies for their angular momentum and eccentricity, and compare the observed distribution to the expectations from a smooth distribution. On this basis we identify at least four "phase space overdensities" of stars on very similar orbits in the Solar neighbourhood. We estimate the statistical significance of these overdensities by Monte Carlo simulations. Three of them have been identified previously: the Sirius and Hercules moving group and a stream found independently in 2006 by Arifyanto and Fuchs and Helmi et al. In addition, we have found a new stream candidate on a quite radial orbit, suggesting an origin external to the Milky Way's disk. Also, there is evidence for the Arcturus stream and the Hyades-Pleiades moving group in the sample. This analysis, using only a minute fraction of the final RAVE data set, shows the power of this experiment to probe the phase-space substructure of stars around the Sun.

Soft transverse expansion in Pb(158 AGeV) on Pb collisions: preequilibrium motion or 1st order phase transition?

  Nuclear Theory (arXiv)

Summary: Transverse expansion of centrally produced matter in Pb on Pb collisions at beam energies around 158 AGeV appears to be rather `soft'. Two possible reasons -- an extended preequilibrium stage and a first order phase transition from a quark-gluon-plasma into hadronic matter -- are discussed. The softening of transverse expansion caused by preequilibrium dynamics is estimated with the aid of the transport model RQMD which does not contain a first order phase transition. It is found that the anisotropy of transverse flow in non-central reactions is very different in the preequilibrium and hydrodynamic scenarios even if the latter are based on a strong 1st order transition.

  CERN Preprints

Summary: The recent large EQ that occurred in Greece (April 1st, 2011, Ms = 6.7R) is investigated as far as it concerns regional geophysical features of the Greek territory. In particular, the EQ location is compared to the deep lithospheric fracture zones and faults, derived from the analysis of the corresponding earth's gravity field; to the current seismic potential map determined from the study of the past seismicity, while its time of occurrence is compared to the peaks of the M1 and diurnal tidal waves. The detailed investigation of the earth's electric field that was recorded by the ATH monitoring site, located in Athens, revealed the presence of short train like pulses type electric seismic precursory signals which were generated short (1 - 2 days) before the EQ occurrence time. Moreover, the analysis (for T = 1 day) of the earth's oscillating electric field, that was simultaneously recorded at PYR and ATH monitoring sites, revealed that the "strange attractor like" seismic electric precursor preceded for 1 - ...

Seismic electric precursors observed prior to the 6.3R EQ of July 1st 2009, Greece and their use in short-term earthquake prediction

  CERN Preprints

Summary: The normalized raw data of the Earth's electric field, monitored at PYR, ATH, HIO monitoring sites in Greece, are studied as far as it concerns the presence of electric seismic precursors. Electric preseismic pulses, plateau-like anomalous electric field and Very Long Period (VLP) anomalies were detected prior to the occurrence of the July 1st, 2009 large (Ms = 6.3R) EQ in Greece. Further processing of the same data revealed the true form of the generated preseimic potential thus providing an indirect estimation of the time window of the occurrence of the large EQ. Finally, by correlating, at pairs, the anomalous electric field from all monitoring sites it is possible to calculate the "strange attractor like" seismic electric precursor that provides a time window for the occurrence of the large EQ and utilizes the determination not only of the regional seismogenic area that has been activated but also a more precise epicenter too.

[Fe II] 1.64 um Imaging Observations of the Outflow Features around Ultracompact H II Regions in the 1st Galactic Quadrant

  CERN Preprints

Summary: We present [Fe II] 1.644 um features around ultracompact H II regions (UCHIIs) found on a quest for the "footprint" outflow features of UCHIIs---the feature produced by the outflowing materials ejected during the earlier, active accretion phase of massive young stellar objects (MYSOs). We surveyed 237 UCHIIs in the 1st Galactic quadrant, employing the CORNISH UCHII catalog and UWIFE data which is an imaging survey in [Fe II] 1.644 um performed with UKIRT-WFCAM under ~ 0.8" seeing condition. The [Fe II] features were found around five UCHIIs, one of which is of low plausibility. We interpret that the [Fe II] features are shock-excited by outflows from YSOs, and estimate the outflow mass loss rates from the [Fe II] flux, which are ~ 1 x 10^-6 - 4 x 10^-5 Ms yr^-1. We propose that the [Fe II] features might be the "footprint" outflow features, but more studies are required to clarify it. This is based on the morphological relation between the [Fe II] and 5 GHz radio features, the outflow mass loss rate, the trav...

Overview and status of the Next European Dipole (NED) joint research activity

  CERN Preprints

Summary: The Next European Dipole (NED) Joint Research Activity was launched on 1st January 2004 to promote the development of high performance Nb3Sn conductors in collaboration with European industry (aiming at a non-copper critical current density of 1500 A/mm2 at 4.2 K and 15 T) and to assess the suitability of Nb3Sn technology to the next generation of accelerator magnets (aiming at an aperture of 88 mm and a conductor peak field of ~ 15 T). It is part of the Coordinated Accelerator Research in Europe (CARE) project, involves eight collaborators and is half-funded by the European Union. After briefly recalling the Activity organization, we report the main progress achieved over the last year, which includes: the manufacturing of a double-bath He II cryostat for heat transfer measurements through Nb3Sn conductor insulation, detailed quench computations for various NED-like magnet configurations, the award of two industrial subcontracts for Nb3Sn conductor development, the first results of a cross-calibration progra...

European XFEL (in Polish)

  CERN Preprints

Summary: European X-Ray FEL – free electron laser is under construction in DESY Hamburg. It is scheduled to be operational at 2015/16 at a cost more than 1 billion Euro. The laser uses SASE method to generate x-ray light. It is propelled by an electron linac of 17,5GeV energy and more than 2km in length. The linac uses superconducting SRF TESLA technology working at 1,3 GHz in frequency. The prototype of EXFEL is FLASH Laser (200 m in length), where the “proof of principle” was checked, and from the technologies were transferred to the bigger machine. The project was stared in the nineties by building a TTF Laboratory -Tesla Test Facility. The EXFEL laser is a child of a much bigger teraelectronovolt collider project TESLA (now abandoned in Germany but undertaken by international community in a form the ILC). A number of experts and young researchers from Poland participate in the design, construction and research of the FLASH and EXFEL lasers.

The European XFEL Project

  CERN Preprints

Summary: The European XFEL project is a 4th generation photon source to be built in Hamburg. Electron bunches, accelerated to 17.5GeV by the XFEL linac, are distributed to three long SASE undulators. There photon pulses with full lateral coherence and wavelengths between 0.1nm and 4.9nm (12.4 keV and 0.8 keV) are generated for three beamlines. It will deliver around 1012photons within each 100 fs pulse, reaching a peak brilliance of 1033photonss?1mm?2mrad?2(0.1%BW)?1. Thus it will offer unprecedented possibilities in photon science research including nano-object imaging and studies (e.g. by coherent X-ray scattering) and ultra fast dynamic analysis of plasma and chemical reactions (e.g. by X-ray photo correlation spectroscopy). The detector requirements for such studies are extremely challenging: position sensitive area detectors have to provide a dynamic range of ? 104, with single-photon sensitivity, while withstanding radiation doses up to 1GGy (TID). Furthermore the detectors have to record data from tra...

Status of the Next European Dipole (NED) Activity of the Collaborated Accelerator Research in Europe (CARE) Project

  CERN Preprints

Summary: Plans for LHC upgrade and for the final focalization of linear colliders call for large aperture and/or high-performance dipole and quadrupole magnets that may be beyond the reach of conventional NbTi magnet technology. The Next European Dipole (NED) activity was launched on January 1st, 2004 to promote the development of high-performance, Nb3Sn wires in collaboration with European industry (aiming at a non-copper critical current density of 1500 A/mm2 at 4.2 K and 15 T) and to assess the suitability of Nb3Sn technology to the next generation of accelerator magnets (aiming at an aperture of 88 mm and a conductor peak field of 15 T). It is integrated within the Collaborated Accelerator Research in Europe (CARE) project, involves seven collaborators, and is partly funded by the European Union. We present here an overview of the NED activity and we report on the status of the various work packages it encompasses.

When Chaos Meets Computers

  Nonlinear Sciences (arXiv)

Summary: This paper focuses on an interesting phenomenon when chaos meets computers. It is found that digital computers are absolutely incapable of showing true long-time dynamics of some chaotic systems, including the tent map, the Bernoulli shift map and their analogues, even in a high-precision floating-point arithmetic. Although the results cannot directly generalized to most chaotic systems, the risk of using digital computers to numerically study continuous dynamical systems is shown clearly. As a result, we reach the old saying that "it is impossible to do everything with computers only".

Scientometrics and the evaluation of European integration

  CERN Preprints

Summary: In this chapter, we elaborate on the topic of European integration in science. We will not deal with questions related to the effects of European integration, but only with the scientometric question how one can quantitatively indicate integration of the European science system. Our study is intended to facilitate and supplement debates rather than to provide a final answer to the questions whether European integration 'exists'. In this chapter, we first discuss the use of scientometric indicators in research evaluation from a historical perspective in (section 2). A discussion of European science policy follows (section 3). Then, we introduce a number of indicators of integration and discuss our empirical results concerning the evolution of the European science system in the 1980s and 1990s (section 4). We close the chapter with a discussion of possible avenues of future research for enhancing research evaluation (section 5).

Preseismic electric field "strange attractor" like precursor analysis applied on large (Ms > 5.5R) EQs, which occurred in Greece during December 1st, 2007 - April 30th, 2008

  CERN Preprints

Summary: In order to investigate the capability of the preseismic electric field "strange attractor like" precursor as a time predictor of a large EQ within a short time window (short-term prediction), the specific methodology was applied on the Earth's electric field recorded during a rather long seismically active period (December 1st, 2007 - April 30th, 2008) of Greece. During this period of time a number (8) of large (Ms > 5.5R) earthquakes took place. The particular analysis is presented in detail for the following EQs: the Monemvasia EQ (January 6th 2008, Ms = 6.6R), the Methoni EQs (February 14th 2008 Ms = 6.7R, February 19th 2008 Ms = 5.6R, February 20th 2008 Ms = 6.5R, February 26th 2008 Ms = 5.7R), the Skyros EQ (March 19th 2008 Ms = 5.5R) and the Mid Southern Creta EQ (March 28th 2008 Ms = 5.6R). The obtained results from the analysis of the afore mentioned EQs, in conjunction to the ones obtained from an earlier presentation of the particular methodology (Thanassoulas et al. 2008a), suggest: an average tim...

Preseismic oscillating electric field "strange attractor like" precursor, of T = 6 months, triggered by Ssa tidal wave. Application on large (Ms > 6.0R) EQs in Greece (October 1st, 2006 - December 2nd, 2008)

  CERN Preprints

Summary: In this work the preseismic "strange attractor like" precursor is studied, in the domain of the Earth's oscillating electric field for T = 6 months. It is assumed that the specific oscillating electric field is generated by the corresponding lithospheric oscillation, triggered by the Ssa tidal wave of the same wave length (6 months) under excess strain load conditions met in the focal area of a future large earthquake. The analysis of the recorded Earth's oscillating electric field by the two distant monitoring sites of PYR and HIO and for a period of time of 26 months (October 1st, 2006 - December 2nd, 2008) suggests that the specific precursor can successfully resolve the predictive time window in terms of months and for a "swarm" of large EQs (Ms > 6.0R), in contrast to the resolution obtained by the use of electric fields of shorter (T = 1, 14 days, single EQ identification) wave length. More over, the fractal character of the "strange attractor like" precursor in the frequency domain is pointed out. Fina...
