Title: Pool boiling from downward-facing curved surfaces

Journal Article · · Transactions of the American Nuclear Society
OSTI ID:76144

Experiments of pool boiling from inclined, downward-facing flat surfaces in water have shown a strong dependence on surface inclination, with the lowest maximum heat flux (MHF) and minimum film boiling heat flux (q{sub min}) corresponding to the downward-facing position. However, these results are not applicable to curved surfaces, for which no experimental data are available. The hemispherical or toroidal vessel head provides a continually increasing inclination and increasing area for vapor generation and flow, which would affect MHF. This work experimentally investigates pool boiling from downward-facing curved surfaces in saturated water. The MHF and corresponding wall superheat are compared with those for flat surfaces.
