| Description/Abstract | A portable solar autoclave was designed and tested for the sterilization of up to 7.5 kg of medical instruments. the unit consisted of two coaxial cylinders, the inner one housing the instruments and the outer one receiving solar energy which was reflected by segmented mirrors covering the inside surface of a truncated cone. The spacing between the cylinders was filled with water and the unit was focused toward the sun. The utilized solar energy evaporated the water which was then condensed over the instruments and provided a hot and wet environment desirable for killing of viruses. The autoclave was designed so as to produce wet steam at 121/sup 0/C when it was operated at 9 a.m. in December in Shiraz with a wind velocity of 12 km/hr. It produced higher temperatures when operated at more favorable conditions. |
