The electrodynamic and spectral characteristics of a helium plasma in a microwave discharge are studied. It is shown that the pronounced deviation from local thermodynamic equilibrium (electron number density and densities of higher excited states much less than LTE values) is due to spatial inhomogeneity of the plasma. There is evidence that slight impurities (approximately-less-than1%) of molecular gases strongly affect the discharge properties. On the basis of an analysis of the experimental data for microwave discharges in helium and argon it is suggested that a modified theory of the equilibrium microwave discharge be used to describe nonequilibrium microwave discharges.
