A number of non-synfuel uses of oil shale have been developed and are being investigated on a world wide basis. Oil shale has been utilized in a non-synfuel mode from prehistoric times, so current innovative non-synfuel oil shale applications should not be a surprise. Alternate uses of oil shale are reported in direct combustion for heat and power generation, cement, agriculture, insulation, building material, extractive metallurgy and as heavy metal sources. Numerous byproducts have also been developed. 25 refs., 7 figs., 2 tabs.
