Liquid-phase oxidation of chloro- and nitrotoluenes with dilute nitric acid at 180-250/sup 0/C under pressure allows the corresponding benzoic acids to be obtained with high yield. The processes that occur at various points in a plug-flow reactor can be brought into a certain correspondence with the processes occurring through time in a batch reactor, if the temperatures, initial reactant ratios, and character of heat and mass exchange between adjacent microvolumes are equal. Valuable information for evaluating the distribution characteristics of gas formation can be gained from an analysis of the kinetics of oxidation and the rate of pressure buildup when the reaction is conducted in a small closed thermostatted volume with known initial ratio of the liquid and gas phases. The model object selected for study was p-nitrotoluene. The oxidation of p-nitrotoluene with dilute nitric acid was carried out in titanium cells with volumes of 40 and 80 mL.
