Design of economically optimum aquifer reservoirs for a CAES (compressed air energy storage) powerplant

Description/Abstract

Design of economically optimum aquifer reservoirs for a CAES (compressed air energy storage) Powerplant involves the specification of a number of design variables and requires satisfaction of several constraints imposed by geologic, aboveground machinery, and utility load considerations. A comprehensive framework for the design and optimization process is presented which is based on a particularly advantageous decoupling of the CAES system and which focuses on the aquifer reservoir, air distribution system, and compression system. The state-of-the-art of the required technical information is discussed, and aspects needing further attention are noted.
