Preliminary evaluation of Methacoal as an alternative method of coal transport
- Tex. Air Control Board
A preliminary evaluation of Methacoal as an alternative method of coal transport compared the pipelining of Methacoal (including the cost of producing the methanol) with the water slurry and unit train transportation of coal. Methacoal, a mechanically stabilized suspension of coal in methanol, might be economically competitive with the other coal transportation systems, but further research is required on the rheological behavior and the large-scale production of the methanol suspension. Total water requirements of the Methacoal process are low, and the slurry need not be separated before combustion. The need for alternative fuel supplies, processes and costs of production of methanol at the minehead, the availability of coal, and environmental considerations and safety for this means of transport are discussed.
