To obtain data on the diffusion of natural gas leaks through concrete pavements and foundations, Barnard and Burk, Inc., and the University of Michigan measured the diffusion rate of methane through both dry and water-saturated concrete at atmospheric pressure. Permeability and threshold pressure were the primary parameters governing the diffusion characteristics of the concrete. The diffusion rates calculated from these parameters proved to be in general agreement with methane diffusion through other porous solids such as reservoir rocks.
