Description/AbstractGeorge A. Keyworth II, Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy, testified at a hearing held on the occasion of the Committee on Science and Technology's 25th anniversary and the submission of the 1985 budget proposal of $53 billion, a 14% increase over 1984 spending. Keyworth reviewed the administration's policy of strengthening support for basic research in order to develop scientific talent and to expand the partnership between government, industry, and the universities. To meet these goals, the policy has reduced energy-related demonstration projects and has increased research funding for universities in order to focus on advanced technologies and to keep American science in the forefront. Specific questions from the Committee dealt with national laboratories lack of mission and a new emphasis on the proposed space station, among other items.
