Description/AbstractThe purpose of this program is to demonstrate acoustic intensity for in-situ sound intensity measurements on power transformers and to establish the technical basis for using acoustic intensity techniques for measuring transformer noise. Acoustic intensity is now an established technology using two closely-spaced and phase-matched pressure-sensitive microphones to approximate one component of the intensity vector. When there is excessive background noise, there are limitations for the acoustic intensity method. The limitations as they apply to power transformer noise measurement are described. A practical application of acoustic intensity at the Comerford High Voltage Converter Station is reported. Both the laboratory and the field measurements support the claim that acoustic intensity has applications in the power distribution industry as a useful and accurate tool for quantifying transformer noise, both on the factory floor and in the field.
