Description/AbstractThe moment of inertia is studied as an example of the second order response of a superfluid to an external force. The theory of Bardeen, Cooper and Schrieffer is used to describe the superfluid. It is essential to use the extension of the theory which maintains gauge invariance. The result shows that the usual two-fluid model is applicable, with the superfluid component governed by the irrotational flow hydrodynamics. A correction is found to the expression for the normal fluid density which takes into account the effective mass of the excitations. (auth)
